KSC SHUTTLE STATUS (REVISED) 3/03/93
SPACE SHUTTLE DAILY STATUS-STS 55
Wednesday, March 3, 1993
(UPDATED 4:30 p.m.)
George H. Diller
Kennedy Space Center
Vehicle: OV-102/Orbiter Columbia Mission: STS-55
Current location: Pad 39-A Orbital altitude: 184 sm
Payload: Spacelab D-2 Inclination: 28.45 degrees
Launch date: NET March 16 Landing: KSC March 25
Mission duration: 8 days 22 hours Crew size: 7
STS-55 IN WORK:
- hydraulic fluid cleanup in aft main engine compartment
- examination of main engines and main propulsion system
including electrical connectors and harnesses, solenoid
valves and thermal insulation within the aft compartment
- inspection of #2 main engine heat shields
- failure analysis of hydraulic hose
STS-55 WORK SCHEDULED:
- reinstallation of GAS can experiments Thursday
STS-55 WORK COMPLETED:
- replacement of ruptured hydraulic line
ISSUES AND CONCERNS:
At approximately 6:30 p.m. last night, near the conclusion of the main
engine portion of the Flight Readiness Test, a 3/8-inch hydraulic flex hose
broke which caused hydraulic fluid to spray inside the aft compartment around
the main propulsion system and in the vicinity of main engine number 2. This
line provides hydraulic actuator pressure to retract the LH2 umbilical plate
before external tank door closure. A preliminary assessment of the remedial
action to be taken shows that launch could occur no earlier than March 16. A
more definate date may be available at the end of the week after a full
assessment of the work to be done has been completed.
SPECIAL TOPICS:
STS-56: Discovery's rollover from OPF Bay 3 to the VAB transfer aisle occurred
at 5:41 p.m. last night and the orbiter was hoisted for mating to the external
tank/solid rocket booster stack at 1:50 a.m. this morning. Soft mate is
complete with hard mate in work.
STS-57: Installation of Spacehab into Endeavour has been rescheduled for
Thursday morning to allow some payload bay work to be completed.

% Hydraulic fuel cleanup on Columbia
% Langley Research Center conducts indoor sonic boom tests;

During last night's main engine Flight Readiness Test for STS-55, a hydraulic
flex hose broke which caused hydraulic fluid to spray inside the aft
compartment around the main propulsion system and in the vicinity of main
engine number 2. In light of this, hydraulic fluid cleanup in the aft main
engine compartment will be conducted today. In addition, the main engines, the
main propulsion system and the heat shields will be examined.
The Space Shuttle Columbia is currrently scheduled to be launched from Kennedy
Space Center on March 14 on NASA's second cooperative Spacelab mission with the
Germans

Langley Research Center reports that indoor sonic boom tests are being done to
support high speed civil transport research . Thirty volunteers will take
their turn sitting in a 5-foot square "boom- box" for tests that compare sonic
booms with conventional aircraft noise. Langley has been named lead NASA
center for management of the agency's technology development program for a
future High Speed Civil Transport.

NASA TEACHER RESOURCE CENTER NETWORK
Teachers need immediate access to the information that is generated by
NASA programs, technologies, and discoveries, so they can bring that
excitement into their classrooms. NASA educational materials are
related to art, mathematics, energy, physics, careers, spaceflight,
aeronautics, technology utilization, physical science and social
science. They are a valuable supplement to textbook instruction.
To help disseminate these materials to elementary and secondary
educators, the NASA Educational Affairs Division has established the
NASA Teacher Resource Center Network (TRCN). The network comprises
Teacher Resource Centers (TRCs), Regional Teacher Resource Centers
(RTRCs), and the Central Operation of Resources for Educators (CORE).
TEACHER RESOURCE CENTERS
Located at the nine NASA research centers, TRCs have a variety of
NASA-related educational materials in several formats: video tapes,
slides, audio tapes, publications, lesson plans, and activities. NASA
educational materials are available to be copied at the TRCs.
REGIONAL TEACHER RESOURCE CENTERS
To offer more educators the opportunity to visit the TRCN, NASA forms
partnerships with universities and museums to serve as RTRCs and plans
to RTRCs as broadly distributed geographically as possible. Teachers
may preview NASA materials at these RTRCs or make copies of the materials.
CENTRAL OPERATION OF RESOURCES FOR EDUCATORS (CORE)
Designed for the national and international distribution of aerospace
educational materials to enhance the NASA Teacher Resource Center
Network, CORE provides educators with another source for NASA
educational audiovisual materials. CORE will process teacher requests
by mail for a minimal fee. On school letterhead, educators can
request a catalogue and order forms from:
